Vikings & World Heritage

The history of the Scandinavian countries, particularly during the millennium from 300 A.D until 1300 A.D, is very much a tal
e o f Viking society, Viking campaigns of colonization
and sagas of heroism. Later archaeological finds have proved that the Vikings were not just a race of blond, warring giants b ut that they, in fact, established a well organized and
in many respects advanced civilization. In particular, the seafaring traditions of the Vikings have had a strong and lasting influence on Danish development over many
centuries. However, they were also a race of agriculturists and their society was an early, albeit primitive, forerunner of t he agricultural and seafaring society of 20th century
Denmark. The Vikingland Tour will take you westward from Copenhagen, through farming countryside and small villages, some of which were founded by Vi ki ngs more than a
thousand years ago. Along the way, you will see a number of Viking burial mounds and dolmens. Upon arrival in Roskilde until 1 417, the capital of Denmark we will board the
ship “MS SagaFjord ” and sail on Roskilde Fjord while having lunch at sea. Once back on shore in Roskilde you visit the Viking Ship Museum, whic h c ontains the remains of 5
Viking vessels which have been salvaged from the bed of Roskilde Fjord, where they were sunk more than a thousand years ago t o p revent aggressive intruders gaining access to
the town from the sea. After visiting the museum, a short drive to the Town Square, where a visit will be paid to the twin sp ire d Cathedral. Construction of the Cathedral was
commenced during the 12th century and additions have been made through the ages, in differing architectural styles. The Cathe dra l is the traditional burial place of Danish
monarchs and contains more than 40 royal graves.

The order of the visit can be reversed.
